Para apontar o atual cancioneiro americano, a publicação reuniu dezenas de críticos e especialistas em música.
Sem definir um ranking, o jornal apontou os trinta nomes e as cinco canções que são essenciais na carreira de cada um deles (interpretadas por eles ou outros artistas).
Alguns dos artistas citados se dedicam apenas à composição e escreveram hits que marcaram a história de grandes artistas. Como, por exemplo, Stephin Merritt, compositor de “The Book of Love”, sucesso de de Olivia Rodrigo; e The-Dream, que escreveu hits como “Single Ladies”, de Beyoncé, e “Umbrella”, de Rihanna.
